It is not surprising that Edge chose Hamburg as its second site in Germany, after recently opening in Berlin. Specifically, the Elbbrücken Innovation Quarter is a great fit as an area that is designed as a mixed-use development with offices, residential homes, retail and cultural venues. This lively area is situated along the Elbe River in the eastern part of Hamburg, adjacent to the historic Speicherstadt district and within easy reach of the city centre. As the name suggests, the area fosters innovation and entrepreneurship and is a hub for tech startups, creative industries and forward-thinking businesses. In line with the way Edge develops property, sustainability and innovation are central to the area’s design, with lots of green spaces and energy-efficient features. Though this area is not in the city centre, the connectivity is well-organised so commuters, theatregoers and other visitors can easily reach the Elbbrücken Innovation Quarter. EDGE HafenCity will offer excellent connectivity to the public transport system, and the use of public transport is encouraged by a limited number of car parking spaces and a spacious and attractive indoor area dedicated to bicycle parking.
SMART, Sustainable and User-centric
At EDGE HafenCity all used energy is renewable, there are photovoltaic panels and industrial waste is heated via the district heating. All this and more is done to reduce operational carbon emissions to eventually reach zero operational carbon emissions over the lifetime of the building. Additionally, EDGE HafenCity will be a SMART-operated building, putting the office and meeting room users first by allowing them to fine-tune the settings to their comfort regarding lighting, air quality and temperature. With the smart building app, brightness, temperature, sun protection, and numerous other settings can also be individually controlled to optimise and personalise the workplace. Everything and everyone in the building is anonymously connected using a wired or wireless approach.
